William Hobson’s vision

One of the really cool things I’ve discovered over the last few years is the early history of Newberg Friends Church. I’ve been compelled to learn about William Hobson, who came to tiny, frontier Newberg to create a Quaker community. His vision, though, was huge…it refused to be separated into church/secular, but saw all of life as God’s domain.
This video is one I’m working on for George Fox University’s Quaker Heritage emphasis next week. I’d love to hear what you think…while there’s still time to change it!

I think the video is great! Nice job. I like the questions at the end. (One typo, though–the first time it says a Friends college it has the apostrophe like this “Friend’s” when it should be “Friends’”.)
Looks like it will be a great Quaker Heritage Week!

I randomly came across this video. What an incredible testament to Hobson’s vision, the perseverance of many, and the leading of the Lord. Thanks for putting this together. I hope that the Fox community sees what a remarkable work God has in this place. Thanks again for putting things in perspective for me.

Freaking awesome! I got goosebumps as I watched it … maybe because it is cold in the house … maybe not! Thanks Gregg. I’ve recently thought about reading the book about the YM Garden of/for the Lord by Ralph Beebe … I might make time to do that now!

Great job in Chapel, today. I liked the way you used media to introduce the idea of a Quaker “vision” for Newberg. It worked… Even though the college was just one aspect of the “vision,” I think the students could connect to the idea of being an important part of the Newberg community, even if it is just for a few years… And, of course, I LOVED the U2 video at the end.

Gregg, what kind of response did you get from the student body? Any suggestions on how they/we might be part of God’s vision for today’s Newberg? I’m intrigued.

Haunting questions posed well. It’s about more than churches doing their own thing. There is something larger at work that should capture us all.
